Meet Ace, the widely known Traveling Magician, with an ever-changing card tucked in their hat and a giant yellow suitcase always in hand. From morning performances to afternoon taunts at bounty hunters and nights spent stargazing, adventure follows them wherever they go. Yet there’s one lesson to remember: the closer you look, the less you truly see. Beneath the spectacle lies a storm of inner turmoil and a truth Ace refuses to reveal, even when it conflicts with their longing for connection or a way back home. And if you dare to ask, well as Ace would say, a magician never reveals their secrets.

Questions & Ace

basics

What are Ace’s pronouns?

  • Ace uses they/he!

Why the name “Ace”?

  • It was a name they liked. Card tricks was the first act they mastered in this new life they’re adjusting to, and for that, it seems fitting to have a new name.
Besides they don't think anyone would recognize their old self regardless, they tried.

What kind of OC are they in the SMG4 universe?

  • To quote Mr.Puzzles himself, Ace's more of a "side character". Simply living their life behind the scenes. There are some elements and characters I took from canon, like I have with taking “the Bounty Bar” from an episode, for their backstory. I also took some other things from the Mario Galaxy games!

Does Ace have a birthday? Do they celebrate it?

  • Ace can't exactly remember when they were born, even their Mama didn't know. Their family doesn't usually celebrate birthdays; there was only a clear indication when each of kiddos became adults. Or in Ace's case, when they became a hybrid. So, whenever anyone asked, they decided to go with their "landing" day: June 8th

If interacted, is Ace approachable/kind?

  • Yes, I’d say so! Ace tries to be in every way they can! There have been people in Ace’s life who taught him about kindness, compassion. So, it is what they pass on to the world, being who they are and with their magic.

What’s their favorite color?

  • Red, similar to his duo-colored vest.

What’s their favorite song?

  • Not a particular song per say; Ace likes jazz/swing and waltz music for the most part. They do like "Fly Me to the Moon", "Be Sweet", and "I Can't Hear It Now" if that gives an idea of their tastes.

  • for anyone curious for an OC playlist, hopefully I can get it out there soon!!

What other food does Ace like besides honey and starbits?

  • Ace has eaten all kinds of food. Back when they were younger, Ace and their family were able to eat starbits most of the time. Sweet stuff at best. It's just how their body worked. Whenever they went on trips, he wanted to try human food so badly. They knew immediately, once they turned human, that they just had to try.

What are Ace’s feelings about being a hybrid? Their looks?

  • Ace isn't exactly fully human. All his life, he knew he was meant for a greater purpose, but it didn't turn out the way he imagined it to be. Even if he had already had admiration for humanity. Ace may appear human but his powers define him. Not to mention it's the whole reason why Ace has a bounty on his head to begin with.

  • As for their looks, Ace didn't exactly choose how they would look, that being they were both unconscious and crash-landing head first into the ocean when it happened. There are some features that remind him of the fact he’s half-and-half.

Can Ace get sick?

  • Not exactly. It is hard for Ace to, since he’s half-human. But sometimes they do get extremely tired and loopy if he exerts himself too hard. It's why Ace can't do night shows unless they get a notice ahead of time. It would've been hard to explain they need to recharge, that and when their hair glows.

Is Ace more of a reading or math person?

  • They’re more of a "both" kind of person. They love books, especially storybooks. But also, since they do make all the stage sets themselves, there's a bunch of math to work with.

BEING A TRAVELING MAGICIAN

What kind of magic Ace specializes in? Is it one specifically or is it mix-match?

  • (see stats for full list) While Ace does have powers, they do some illusion magic, stunts, and card tricks (of course, being the first one he's ever learned). And, if you can imagine, origami. Overall, he does a mixture of both natural and the typical. But he figured that he shouldn't rely too much on his own powers for acts for multiple reasons. Ace also knows about the 4th wall, which comes in handy sometimes.

  • Ace’s favorite act is card tricks. So much so they can make the cards dance!

  • The acts adjust depending on the place of the performance, which varies from street corners to stadiums.

How does their magic work?

  • As Ace always says, a magician never tells their secrets.

Does Ace carry their deck of cards in their pockets?

  • They do. Not exactly in his pockets, just with a flick of the wrist and here in his hand they are.

Has Ace ever traveled around the world, and what place would they love to visit?

  • Of course, Ace wasn't given the name "The Traveling Magician" for nothing after all! With so many places they’ve been, it's hard to choose their favorite. The most interesting location for them would have to be Bloopersville. The whole population looked like Mario clones, except in different colors. Ace did meet someone over there who was a big fan, Minion.

  • Their favorite overall location though would have to be those hills near the Showgrounds, Ace had plenty of picnics there.

What other outfits does Ace wear in their shows?

  • Ace has a lot of performance outfits, kind of hard to keep up the numbers, and they're usually on theme with the acts. A lot of planning goes into the shows, especially there's a theme to follow; the venue, talking to stage crew, building the sets. That includes the outfit, the cherry-on-top. One time, they did a show tour based on the Alice-in-Wonderland tale and their outfit was inspired by Alice. And even then, in case of any emergency, they can always make a new one on the fly from what they packed on their suitcase. Otherwise, they have the usual fit they were as in the ref sheet.

Has there been a time where Ace attempted a trick (new or old) and it went really poorly?

  • In the beginning year of learning tricks, Ace tried to practice at home/the Mushroom Kingdom coastline. There were a lot of broken china sets, sofa chairs suddenly thrown out of windows. Somehow his eyes became a glowing beacon at one point instead of the broken light he tried to fix, he was still renovating you see. But he definitely learned how to improvise. One time, they made a paper blue bird for a kid when (by the shenanigans of the SMG4 world) a glass by a nearby shop burned it to ash. The kid was about to cry and Ace was still a mere street performer, obviously unsure what to do. But they collected themselves quickly, took the ash to their hands, and made a paper phoenix come out of it. Luckily it turned out well.

PERSONAL LIFE

You mentioned something about a lighthouse?

  • When Ace first stumbled upon the Mushroom Kingdom, he needed a place to stay for the night and luckily not too far, there was an abandoned lighthouse. Changed into some new clothes, ate some honey. While their memories were a bit fuzzy, Ace's hair being dusted by sand was a clear one.
It wasn't exactly what Ace planned but that lighthouse slowly became a home to them. After all, it was the closest thing that touched the sky.

Does he love anyone or something he's really into?

  • Ace does love his friends platonically, as they have done so much for him. But most of all, they love their family, they mean everything to Ace and is the main reason Ace keeps on being motivated.

  • As to romantically, the short answer is no. Ace currently doesn't have a romantic partner, and even if he wanted to, he can't. It'd be too risky on so many levels. But most of all, he can’t lose another one again.

Thoughts on dating?

  • Ace had a partner, once. But they have decided that sometimes it's best not to pursue those kinds of feelings, for both ways.

What is the star earring Ace is wearing?

  • Ace didn't have it before coming to the Mushroom Kingdom but one time, passing by a jewelry store, seeing it on the window display reminded him of his adoptive mother, or who he refers to as "Mama". And so, that earring became a part of their fit.

How does Ace defend themselves?

  • If cornered, Ace can always rely on their cards. With the right precision and speed, they can act as throwing knives.

  • The same with all their magic, it comes directly from Ace without having to use their wand. Don't be deceived by the spectacle; the closer you look, the less you actually see. It's how Ace manages to slip away from the grasp of Hitman Inc. and every bounty hunter they’ve come across. The illusion is their defense.

What’s with the giant yellow suitcase Ace always carries?

  • It’s their travel suitcase. It seems awfully big but it's actually quite light. Well, at least for Ace that is; it’s heavy for everyone else. Since their shows are world-wide, Ace carries everything they need. Clothes, some props, tool kit. And they can never forget their pouch of coins and starbits. Ace doesn't necessarily need food per say, except for starbits or honey obviously, but sometimes they can't help but admire the treats the vendors sell while they travel.

  • The patches of their suitcases are from his travels. Whenever they travel, Ace tends to buy themselves a souvenir from every town or country they go to. Sometimes it'd be another snow globe on their shelf, other times a roll of fabric to save for a future performance outfit. And then there's stickers on his suitcase!

Does Ace drink?

  • Ace has never been a fan. Alcohol has always been either too bitter or strong whenever it was offered to them in live events and galas. So they might've found ways to empty their glass without anyone seeing, like dropping into a potted plant for example. The only thing that is tolerable for Ace would be Moscato. After a couple of trials, they found out that if they drink too much, they end up hiccuping literal bubbles.

You mention Ace tailoring their own clothes?

  • They usually prefer clothes that are more fitted to their body, not much of a fan wearing baggy clothes/garments unless it's for "the audience" ← their words. Plus the fact that he's 60ft/182cm tall. The only exception being their oversized coat that acts as their cape since it becomes useful to keep warm in the cold winters, or it gives off the peacock-illusion that Ace is bigger than he seems and bounty hunters might strike the jacket/air rather than him.

  • Closet-wise? Not so much. Probably got 3-4 other fits, like their pajamas/casual/formal, when there's no theme or just being at home.

ABOUT THE PAST

There is a lot of “fallen star” imagery, is Ace related to the Lumas somehow?

  • There is that imagery, yes, as intended. In regards to the Lumas, according to Ace himself, “Not that it matters anymore. The Lumas, it's all in the past now”.

Does Ace know about their family? Do they visit them?

  • They do, yes. There's a whole lot of siblings (biological and adopted), friends, and their mother, whom he calls Mama.

  • Ace wishes they could. Ever since they were stranded on the SMG4 planet, he has been trying so hard to find his way back home. Or at least let them know Ace was okay, he really did try. (If only Hitman Inc didn't stop him that day...) Their best bet was finding Miss Pauline but it only caused more trouble than what it's worth.

How is Ace’s relationship with their family?

  • Ace loves their (adoptive) family so much, and knows they do in return. They mean everything to Ace, the one thing that is their determination for every show, every step. Though, they might not recognize Ace at all if they ever meet again, as he was G[REDACTED] to them. Before what Ace is now. But it won't stop him from finding a way to go back home, to them.

Has Ace ever tried talking to Pauline?

  • Yes, once. Ace knew that their Mama and Pauline used to date back in the day, so they figured that she could help them contact home. They caught word that she became a reporter and getting to be interviewed by her would be the key. Things didn't go exactly as planned, unfortunately.

KNOWING ABOUT SPACE

What do starbits taste like?

  • Starbits taste sweet, like honey. Crystallized on the outside and syrup-y in the middle. There's a certain way you have to eat it, otherwise you'll just be getting the hard part.

What’s the difference between homemade and real starbits?

  • HOMEMADE STARBITS: simple few ingredients (sugar, water, etc) at home, more sugary than the typical honey flavor, size ranges from a fingernail to an eraser, mostly for subsistence.

  • TRUE STARBITS: compressed/clustered space sugar and does have a sprinkle of star "dust" or cosmic debris (but it doesn't taste like dirt at all), have that honey flavor or jam in the middle if you're lucky, sizes ranges from a baseball to a volleyball, can be for food or defensive projectiles.

  • Simply put, it's more authentic when starbits come from space!

MEETING THE CREW

How did the Crew first know about Ace?

  • Being the infamous Traveling Magician that they are, the Crew happened to stumble upon one of their street performances. I mean, it was hard to not notice, considering the crowd around them and the fact that Ace is incredibly tall. And also "THEY CAN FLY?!" The Crew were really impressed by their act, Tari certainly liked it when Ace gifted her a giant duckie plush out of their hat.

  • It wasn't until later on when the couple of times Ace visited 3's cafe, they got to know him better. Sometimes they would stop by their table and chat. Obviously 3 did, Ace was the one who only ordered anything sweet, like honey pastries. He figured they must be a sugar-addict or something. Like "Huh, weird."

What’s the relationship between Ace and the Crew?

  • SMG4—Ace and 4 have such a mutual understanding of their wish, to spread joy to the world, and they respect one another for their craft/dedication. Though Ace does scold 4 (lightheartedly and out of concern) to get some more rest, knowing how important it is to recharge. On a more deeper level, these two understand what it's like to carry guilt from self-blame. A few times, Ace would ask him "What is it like, being a human and Meme Guardian?" or "Did you ever meet SMG0?" and other questions like this. As it turned out, Ace and the SMGs have a lot in common.

  • SMG3—Ace is indeed a frequent customer in 3's cafe, always ordering something sweet. Certainly, for a good while, 3 thought Ace would die from all that sugar, but surprisingly, it's like Ace lives off of it. But y'know, a customer is a customer. Plus, Ace was a well-known performer so it brought some attention to the cafe. Later on though, after 3 found Ace reading a storybook to Eggdog and some tea with honey, they started to connect a bit more. How they lost loved ones, how they're scared of being vulnerable. They aren't exactly buddy-buddy per say, but there is a high level of respect and understanding.

  • Mario—Actually, Ace and Mario met a long time ago. 10 years, to be exact. Ace thought that Mario would probably wouldn't recognize them, especially not as Ace. Well, except Mario does, and what a shock that was for them. (bro basically clocked the magician, haha) Regardless, Ace generally is close to the Mario Bros, seeing each other like (found) family in a way.

  • Mr. Puzzles—Ace and Puzzles have met before when they were younger. They remembered how his eyes sparkled when he saw their tricks. His father wasn't much of a fan though.

  • SMG0—Ace was a world traveler but they certainly have done some dimension-hopping themselves. They met SMG0 a really really really long time ago, before Niles and the first intervention of the Godbox. They had a great friendship, Zero was the one who introduced tea with honey to Ace after all. After a while, Ace had to leave, and you can imagine how they reacted to learn that Zero was just gone. Found some pieces of the Godbox, but Ace never knew whatever happened to Zero.

Why is WPNZ the only person Ace dislikes?

  • Let's just say Ace isn't a fan of anyone who has and still works for Hitman Inc. Karen has always been an exception.

HITMAN INC.

What is the deal with Ace and Hitman Inc/bounty hunters?

  • Ace isn't the type to have grudges, but has a huge dislike of anything and anyone associated with Hitman Inc. Whenever there's an encounter, he would have some quippy banter while trying to escape from them. I mean, there's not much he could do to stop these interactions entirely when his file as a target is in the Bounty Bar in the SMG4 universe.

How many bounties does Ace have?

  • Apparently as many bounties for Hitman Inc. to hold a grudge against Ace for what they did, the Starstruck Incident.
